Villeneuve - happy at BAR?
Comment on the CART and Formula-1 ex-Champion
by Michael Bass
Jacques Villeneuve, once the world champion, fought hard to score points for the newly-born team British American Racing.
Jacques, along with team-mate and Formula One newcomer Ricardo Zonta brought the car home to a last place position in the Contructors Championship table with no points scored during their first season with the team.
The season has been a learning process for BAR, and their drivers; hype surrounded all at the beginning of the season, and no-one actually knew just how well the team would prove to be. The answer soon became clear however, as mid-season arrived with neither drivers finishing a race...
Jacques has stated that he will see out his contract at BAR, despite the political infighting going on at board level - however, the results of that bun-fight will decide whether he is to stay at BAR for an extra season, or to leave it for another team that could give him a competitive ride.
Villeneuve's original reasons for joining the team included his expectations for a nice family atmosphere, but with Raynard and Pollock throwing their toys out of the pram, things deteriorated over the second half of the season. Villeneuve said: "It's been frustrating to drive for a team that has been brought to its knees by internal feuding, but I have a contract and I intend to honour it."
With Zanardi's exit rumoured rumoured left, right and centre, there is a lot of speculation that Villeneuve could return to Williams: the team who brought him to Formula One is thought keen to see him return. However, it's all speculation, considering Jacques stated intent to see out his contract.
Unhappy with the state of affairs at what should have been his friendly family team, Jacques has found solice from an unexpected quarter: meeting Dannii Monogue in May, the Canadian fell head over heels in love, and is due to be married. The couple are planning to marry on a cruise-ship in Sidney Harbour on New Year's Eve.
Congratulations Jacques!
