FIA Press Release
McLAREN: COULTHARD SETS THE PACE
David Coulthard set the pace in the race morning warm-up on 1m 19.261s in the McLaren-Mercedes MP4/15, team-mate Mika Hakkinen(1m 20.464s) running different fuel levels and scrubbing tyres. The session was trouble-free for both drivers and Coulthard did an installation lap in the spare car as well as trying to clean up the right-hand side of the circuit on his starting position.
FERRARI: SECOND AND THIRD
The Ferrari F1-2000s of Michael Schumacher (1m 19.3821s) and Rubens Barrichello (1m 19.961s) wound up second and third fastest. Both drivers did two laps in the spare cars and then two runs with their race cars. Michael tried one pit stop and made a minor set-up adjustment.
WILLIAMS: RALF SCHUMACHER FOURTH
Ralf Schumacher's Williams-BMW FW22(1m 20.438s) was third fastest, both his and Jenson Button's car (1m 21.220s) sporting the exit vents on their side pods. Ralf had slight understeer and also tried the spare car. Button reported much improved front-end grip.
JORDAN: NO PROBLEMS FOR FRENTZEN
Heinz-Harald Frentzen (1m 20.682s) had a trouble-free run in his Jordan Mugen-Honda EJ10 but team-mate Jarno Trulli had to start his set-up work from scratch after a bent component was found in his race car's left rear suspension. Having spent the whole of Saturday trying to work round this fault, he now had too much oversteer.
SAUBER: DINIZ/SALO SEVENTH AND EIGHTH
Pedro Diniz set seventh fastest time in his Sauber-Petronas (1m 20.914s), commenting that it is very tricky to prevent the front tyres from graining on this circuit. Mika Salo (1m 21.016s) wound up eighth, the Finn reporting that it felt very good in race trim.
BRIEFLY
BAR: Jacques Villeneuve (9th) did a long run in the spare BAR-Honda in order to scrub tyres. ARROWS: Both Arrows A21 drivers reported that their cars felt better today. BENETTON: Giancarlo Fisichalla (14th) complained that his Benetton-Playlife yawed from understeer to oversteer while Alexander Wurz (19th) had problems with his power steering system. PROST: Jean Alesi had a long run in his Prost-Peugeot, completing five laps in the race car and three in the spare. He reported excessive understeer. Nick Heidfeld wound up 22nd after completing only five laps before the car jumped out of gear and he spun.
Formula-1.co.uk Report
The Hungarian Grand Prix looks to be a straight battle between Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. The two front row men also dominated this mornings Sunday warmup session, with Coulthard taking the fastest time from the championship leader.
This afternoon's race could see the Schumacher's championship lead taken for the first time this season as both Coulthard and Hakkinen lie just two points adrift of the German. Mika Hakkinen does not seem to be on the pace of his team-mate, but in starting third on the grid cannot be discounted from the battle for the win.
Rubens Barrichello was third fastest in the second Ferrari, some 0.7 seconds slower than Schumacher, while Ralf Schumacher continued his good Hungarian weekend by taking the fourth fastest time.
The Hungarian Grand Prix begins at 13.00 BST, 14.00 CET and 07.00 EST.
