FIA Report
Weather conditions: Cool, dry and sunny
WARM-DELAYED BY FOG.
The Sunday morning warm-up was delayed by 1 hour 40 minutes due to foggy weather which prevented the medical helicopter arriving at the track earlier. Because of the delays to the programme, the Drivers' Parade was cancelled.
McLAREN: TROUBLED SESSION FOR MIKA.
Although David Coulthard had a trouble free session running both the T-car and his race car to set the fastest time of the session, it was a troubled morning for Mika Hakkinen. A problem sensor in the McLaren-Mercedes' pneumatic valve system saw the mechanics set about changing the T-car for the Finn. However, the problem was then cured and he finally resumed practice with his race car. He ran only 8 laps, but was still fourth fastest. The team are considering an engine change before the race.
ARROWS: DE LA ROSA A SURPRISE SECOND.
Running a light fuel load, Arrows driver Pedro de La Rosa surprised everyone with second fastest time, the Spaniard happy to have fixed his braking problems of Saturday thanks to the dry track conditions. Verstappen was tenth after a trouble-free session.
WILLIAMS: RALF SCHUMACHER HOPING FOR RAIN.
Ralf Schumacher was delighted with his Williams-BMW this morning, but admitted he was hoping for rain to improve his chances of a good finishing position. Button had no problems, the smoke coming from his Williams-BMW at the start of the session down to an over-full oil tank.
BRIEFLY.
BRIDGESTONE: Other than Villeneuve and the two Saubers, most of the field are on the harder of the two tyre types available.
PROST: Heidfeld's practice was delayed when his Prost lost its engine cover. A new one was fitted with no further problems.
JORDAN: Despite 17th and 18th times in the warm-up, the Jordan drivers were delighted with their cars which they ran in heavy race trim to check tyre and brake wear.
FERRARI: No problems for either Michael Schumacher or pole-man Rubens Barrichello who worked on fine tuning and race set-up during the session which saw them respectively fifth and sixth fastest.
SAUBER: Mika Salo did only 5 laps this morning because of engine electrical problems. Diniz was happier with the balance on his chassis.
JAGUAR: Despite an off across a gravel trap for Herbert, the Jaguar team had no troubles, Herbert 11th and Irvine 16th working on race set-up.
Report by Formula-1.co.uk
One hour and 45 minutes after the warmup was scheduled to begin, the Formula One field finally took to the circuit. This fog delay was probably a blessing in disguise as traffic around the Northamptonshire circuit has been described as a 'nightmare' by many and the Police have warned of a gridlock scenario with traffic tailing back 15 miles in either direction on the A43.
On the circuit Ralf Schumacher was the first driver to complete a flying lap, before Jarno Trulli set the pace in his Jordan Mugen Honda. While Michael Schumacher languished down in 20th position, Rubens Barrichello took his Ferrari to the top of the timesheets. Mika Hakkinen meanwhile sat in the pits awaiting modifications to his spare McLaren, his primary car suffering from engine gremlins.
With ten minutes remaining, Hakkinen finally took to the circuit and immediately jumped to third fastest on his first flying lap - ahead of both Ferrari's. Meanwhile Ralf Schumacher used the superb straight line speed of his BMW Williams to set the fastest time from David Coulthard. Coulthard soon took the position back, with Pedro de al Rosa leaping into second position!
With the warmup beginning late this morning, current rumours suggest that the Television broadcasters have been told to expect a delay to the start of the Grand Prix, which currently scheduled for 1pm (local time).
