FIA Test Report
Weather conditions: Rain, later drying
McLAREN: HAKKINEN GOES FASTEST
Mika Hakkinen set fastest time in this morning's free practice session on 1m 33.132s, winding up 0.228sec ahead of Michael Schumacher's Ferrari and David Coulthard (1m 33.132s). Both McLaren drivers were happy with their wet weather set-up, but surprised that the grip did not improve as one might have expected as the racing line appeared to dry out.
FERRARI: SECOND AND FOURTH
The Ferrari F1-200s of Michael Schumacher (1m 33.360s) and Rubens Barrichello (1m 33.587s) wound up second and fourth fastest. Schumacher was quite happy with the feel of his car, concentrating on running comparative tyre tests, while Barrichello was frustrated by a little too much understeer.
WILLIAMS:MIXED FORTUNES
Ralf Schumacher was quite happy with fifth fastest time on 1m 33.906s although he reported a slightly nervous rear end. Unfortunately Jenson Button spun off at Priory early in the session only for his car to be spun into by Eddie Irvine's Jaguar. The Williams sustained broken left front and rear suspension while the monocoque on Irvine's Jaguar was punctured in the collision.
BENETTON: FISICHELLA TAKES SIXTH
Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton set sixth fastest time after an early oil leak caused an engine change during the middle of the session. Alexander Wurz was a disappointed 17th, frustrated that his car's promising testing form was not being sustained.
JORDAN: GOOD WET SET-UP
Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli set seventh and ninth fastest times, Jordan technical director Mike Gascoyne confirming "we have a very good wet weather set-up, but not so good in the part-damp conditions, We had a trouble-free run apart from Jarno having a trip over the grass."
BRIEFLY
ARROWS: Jos Verstappen (8th) had a slight off-track moment in his Arrows close to the end of the session while Pedro de la Rosa (11th) expressed his worry about the conditions.
SAUBER: Mika Salo (10th) reported that his Sauber's balance was better than yesterday while Pedro Diniz spun off quite hard, damaging his car's nose and front suspension.
PROST: Jean Alesi's Prost-Peugeot suffered an engine failure. Nick Heidfeld had problems warming up his tyres.
BAR: Jacques Villeneuve (14th) had no particular problems and did five runs during the course of the session.
JAGUAR: In the Jaguar camp Eddie Irvine will have to run the untested spare Jaguar R1 after his race car chassis was damaged in the collision with Button, while team-mate Johnny Herbert (18th) struggled with balance for most of the session.
Report by Formula-1.co.uk
On a drying surface, Mika Hakkinen today piped Michael Schumacher to the fastest time in the final practice session before qualifying begins in two hours time. David Coulthard set the third fastest time from Rubens Barrichello, while Ralf Schumacher continued his impressive performance for Williams in fifth place.
Giancarlo Fisichella missed the first of today's two practice sessions, but was soon on the pace in his Benetton Playlife, but still some1.3 seconds off the ultimate pace of Mika Hakkinen.
Jos Verstappen, Pedro de la Rosa and Mika Salo all impressed, while Jenson Button and Eddie Irvine did not run thanks to a collision earlier today when both cars made sharp contact in the gravel trap at Priory. Jean Alesi had another Peugeot V10 let go on him, indicating the reliability problems the team really have given the low temperatures today at Silverstone.
Practice at Silverstone today and yesterday has been pretty inconclusive and with more rain predicted today, it would be foolhardy to bet on who is going to end up where on the grid. However, the battle is going to be between the two top teams in the sport - McLaren and Ferrari, as Mika Hakkinen chases his fourth straight pole of the year and Michael Schumacher looks for his first.
Stay tuned for qualifying - reports suggest a break in the clouds!
