FIA Race Notes
  • Lap 1: At the start Rubens Barrichello takes the lead with Heinz-Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen chasing. Jenson Button holds on to his fifth place while Jacques Villeneuve makes another great start to take sixth place from 10th on the grid. Michael Schumacher does not do well, dropping from fifth on the grid to seventh, just ahead of his brother Ralf, who also makes a poor start. Ralf forces his way past Michael to grab seventh.
  • Lap 2: Ralf Schumacher overtakes Villeneuve at Stowe. Michael Schumacher finds himself trapped behind Villeneuve and the pair begin to drop away from the leading group. Further back Mika Salo passes Jean Alesi for 13th position. Pedro Diniz has an incident and drops from 16th to 19th.
  • Lap 3: The leading group are running nose-to-tail while Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Jos Verstappen make up the chasing group. There is then a small gap to Jarno Trulli's Jordan.
  • Lap 5: The pattern at the front is established with the top six running together, while Villeneuve, M Schumacher and Verstappen drop away. Further back Alexander Wurz overtakes Ricardo Zonta for 15th position.
  • Lap 14: The order is unchanged but Villeneuve and Schumacher are over 20 seconds behind the leading group. Further back Wurz, stuck behind Alesi, pits early trying to get a clear track.
  • Lap 15: Salo also decides to pit early and drops to the tail of the field.
  • Lap 18: Fisichella pits early having been stuck behind Trulli.
  • Lap 20: Verstappen retires from ninth place with hydraulic problems.
  • Lap 24: Frentzen and Ralf Schumacher both pit. Heinz-Harald rejoins in seventh position and Schumacher in eighth.
  • Lap 25: Button pits but his stop is a second slower than his team mates and so he drops to eighth place behind Ralf Schumacher.
  • Lap 28: As the main runners in the midfield pit, de la Rosa retires with a hydraulic problem.
  • Lap 30: Barrichello, Coulthard and Hakkinen are running together. At Stowe Corner Coulthard overtakes Barrichello with a brave move on the outside of the Ferrari.
  • Lap 31: As Coulthard begins to build a lead, Hakkinen pits, rejoining in eighth position. This elevates Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher to third and fourth places.
  • Lap 33: Coulthard pits, leaving Barrichello in the lead. Villeneuve also stops, allowing Schumacher to run second. Coulthard rejoins in fourth and Villeneuve drops to ninth.
  • Lap 35: Barrichello spins because of a hydraulic problem. He pits but retires because of a clutch failure.
  • Lap 36: Michael Schumacher sets the fastest lap of the race as he tries to make up for lost time.
  • Lap 37: Seventh-placed Trulli pits and slips to ninth position. Zonta spins off.
  • Lap 38: Michael Schumacher stops, which allows Frentzen to take the lead with Coulthard second and Ralf Schumacher and Button both ahead of Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher rejoins in sixth.
  • Lap 42: Frentzen pits for the second time and drops to sixth place, allowing Coulthard to take the lead with Ralf Schumacher second and Button third. Then comes Hakkinen.
  • Lap 46: Button stops and drops to sixth position.
  • Lap 47: Ralf Schumacher stops and drops to fifth. This enables Hakkinen to move to second place with M Schumacher third. The Ferrari driver is unable to keep up with the two McLarens. Frentzen is fourth with the two Williams-BMWs in fifth and sixth.
  • Lap 51: As Hakkinen closes up on Coulthard (who has a small problem with his gearbox) Frentzen runs into trouble and slips behind R Schumacher.
  • Lap 52: Frentzen falls behind Button.
  • Lap 54: Frentzen pits and retires with a mechanical problem.
  • Lap 56: As Hakkinen closes on Coulthard, Villeneuve retires with a hydraulic problem. This allows Trulli to overtake to take sixth place.
  • Lap 60: Coulthard crosses the line just ahead of Hakkinen to win his second consecutive British Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher is third with his brother Ralf fourth. Button finishes a popular fifth with Trulli taking the final point for Eddie Jordan.

David Coulthard today beat Mika Hakkinen in a fair fight for the first time in a long while. The Scot drove a superb race that must give him a huge psychological boost at this early stage in the championship.

The start was crucial at Silverstone due to its lack of overtaking opportunities, with Schumacher and Coulthard both getting superb starts. Mike Hakkinen made a relatively poor getaway, thus loosing the place to Coulthard - something he would never get back over the 60 laps. The start of the race also saw Mika Hakkinen vigorously defending his position from the fast starting Schumacher.

The move would have made Schumacher proud - aggressive assertive and relatively clean. Schumacher suddenly found himself down in eight place, with Ralf Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button all passing the German. Mika Hakkinen never seemed to get to grips with Coulthard this afternoon and duly followed the Scot across the line to take six valuable points.

Coulthard said: "I feel fantastic. This is a great feeling to win your home race two years in a row. I developed a small gearbox problem and was beginning to prepare myself for a cry at what might happen, but fortunately the car got home. I thought I was going to be stuck behind Rubens until the stop, but he made a small mistake. I got it right and got a run on him and remembered Nigel Mansell's move on (Nelson) Piquet a few years ago and thought I'd give it a go. I am confident going to Barcelona. We have always gone well on that circuit. It will be close with Ferrari, but there is no reason why we can't win that race."

Michael Schumacher fought back from his eight place by taking a very late pit stop, gaining track position on his way to third position. "I tried the opportunity to go through grass which you can normally do here, but because of the rain I was just spinning and going nowhere. "I lost momentum and then saw Button go past me; then Villeneuve, then Ralf. I had a good fight with him for the first few corners but I had to back off because he seemed keen to close the door and I did not want a clash with my brother. "I ran for most of the race in eighth and was wondering how many points I could lose to the other guys, so it has worked out well finishing third. I am very happy with that."

In fourth place - the first of the two stop drivers - was Ralf Schumacher, who once again drove a superb race for BMW Williams. Surprisingly Jenson Button was able to keep up with the leaders and duly finished the race in 5th place - the second points of his four race Grand Prix career. Clearly Williams have one of the most exciting driver line ups in Formula One. Somewhat significantly, today's result moves BMW Williams in to third place in the constructors' championship, ahead of former rivals Jordan Mugen-Honda and Benetton Playlife!

Jarno Trulli finished in sixth place for Jordan after an uneventful race. The Italian never managed to get around the BAR Honda of Jacques Villeneuve from the start of the race - and only manages to pass when the Canadian retired from the race in the closing laps. For Villeneuve, the race ,must have been encouraging, as his BAR Honda was not far off the ultimate pace. Pole man Rubens Barrichello led a great deal of the race, but David Coulthard - mindful of Nigel Mansell's historic move on Nelson Piquet in 1987 - performed a perfect overtaking manoeuvre on the Brazilian at the end of the Hanger Straight. It all proved academic in the end as Barrichello soon spun and then pitted with hydraulic failure. It was an unfortunate result for the popular Barrichello.

The rest of the field were never really in contention for points, with Fisichella finishing in seventh place for Benetton Playlife and Alexander Wurz two places further back.

Jaguar Racing's dismal season continued with both Eddie Irvine and Johnny Herbert managing to hold off the yellow Minardi's to the flag. Clearly this is a team in real trouble as both cars made poor starts thanks to dragging clutches. The team spent a day at Santa pod testing their racing starts and clutch problems, but clearly did not find a solution. Both drivers also lost time in their pit stops as the Cosworth engine cut out thanks to electronic problems.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen drove a strong race with no reward. The German opted for a two stop strategy, thus leading the race at mid distance as the leaders pitted. A gearbox failure once again cost Frentzen a certain fourth place. Interestingly the German believes that the new regulations that restrict engine electronics, have cost 'him' around 20bhp.

Silverstone was not a great race, but it proved that McLaren are back with a vengeance. The car is fast, both drivers are motivated - but they still have a great deal of work to do if they are to close their 20 point deficit to championship leader Michael Schumacher.
