FIA Report
Weather Conditions: Cloudy, wet track drying
FERRARI:THIRD POLE FOR BARRICHELLO
Rubens Barrichello set the third pole position of his career here this afternoon with the Ferrari F1-2000. "The team gave me a very good car," he said. "I know Silverstone very well from by days with Stewart and Jordan and like the conditions. On my first run I went a little too early, because I thought it might rain again, but then I had to wait to get into sync with everybody else."
Michael Schumacher was disappointed to qualify only fifth after missing what would have been the start of his final lap by 0.1sec as the chequered flag came out.
JORDAN: FRENTZEN HAPPY ON FRONT ROW
Heinz-Harald Frentzen (1m 25.706s) was delighted with his starting position on the front row, admitting that the team gambled on trying a few new components on the car which had not been tested prior to the meeting. Jarno Trulli was balked by a Williams on what he hoped was a very quick lap and later spun off.
McLAREN: THIRD AND FOURTH
The McLaren-Mercedes of Mika Hakkinen (1m 25.741s) and David Coulthard (1m 26.088s) finished the session third and fourth on the grid. "We will have to look at the data to see where the car was not so good," said Hakkinen. "I did not have any problems with traffic." Coulthard added; "I initially had Button and Trulli in front of me, so I dropped back to give them space only for Ralf to come past. I did my second quick lap behind his Williams, but under the circumstances fourth place is not too bad."
WILLIAMS: BUTTON A STRONG SIXTH
Jenson Button set an excellent sixth fastest time in his Williams-BMW "I am really very happy," he said. "It is a great feeling to start alongside Michael Schumacher." Ralf Schumacher's Williams wound up seventh, extremely disappointed and angry. "It was a question of managing to squeeze in a fast lap and of making the tyre choice."
ARROWS: VERSTAPPEN TAKES EIGHTH
Jos Verstappen's Arrows A21 sent eighth fastest time before spinning off heavily while Pedro de la Rosa was disappointed to drop back to 19th.
JAGUAR: IRVINE MAKES TOP TEN
Eddie Irvine only managed ninth fastest time in what started the day as the spare Jaguar R1, the Ulsterman failing to get past the chequered flag into his final lap by five seconds. Johnny Herbert wound up 14th, held up on his last run by a yellow flag.
BRIEFLY
BAR: Jacques Villeneuve qualified tenth on 1m 27.025s. "I expected to end up sixth, but unfortunately completed my last lap under the yellow flag," he said. "I am very happy with the car."
BENETTON: Giancarlo Fisichella was unhappy with the balance of his Benetton (12th).
SAUBER: Pedro Diniz and Mika Salo admitted they misjudged the timing of their runs with the Sauber C19s.
PROST: Nick Heidfeld took the spare Prost AP03 to set 17th fastest time, preferring its choice of gear rations to his original race car.
MINARDI: Marc Gene and Gaston Mazzacane will share the back row for Minardi.
Report by Formula-1.co.uk
Silverstone 2000 is proving nothing if not predictable. It would have been impossible to know who would be on pole position for Sunday's race with five minutes of the 60 minute session remaining, thanks to a rapidly drying track. As it was, Rubens Barrichello timed his run to absolute perfection to claim his first pole position for Ferrari in a manner similar to his first ever pole for Jordan at Spa way back in 1994.
With Barrichello starting the race from the top slot, it marks the Italian teams first pole at Silverstone since Nigel Mansell managed the same feat one decade ago. It was not just that Barrichello was the last driver to start a flying lap, it was the fact that he managed to find a clear lap during his best run as a whole. Indeed, his final lap was spoiled by traffic, as 22 drivers all fought for track position and track time.
Joining the delighted Brazilian on the front row for the British Grand Prix is Heinz-Harald Frentzen. With the Jordan factory a five minute walk from his grid position for tomorrow's race, the team will be more than delighted with his performance at their home event.
Mighty Mika Hakkinen was unable to secure his fourth straight pole position of the season, but will not be too unhappy with third place on the grid, especially as he has team-mate Coulthard and championship archenemy Michael Schumacher are lining up behind him on the grid.
Coulthard and Schumacher both took turns at the top of the timesheets today, but in the case of the German Ferrari driver, he simply did not have the pace of the leaders in the qualifying session when it counted. Schumacher himself will be disappointed with his position, but will be stunned to see his team-mate on pole....
Jenson Button starts the race in a superb sixth position - the highest position of his short career with BMW Williams. Not only did Button manage to create space for his final run with some mature thinking, he managed to beat team-mate Ralf Schumacher by the smallest of margins to make it a 50 percent Ralf beating record in 2000.
Jos Verstappen and the Arrows team have looked impressive throughout last weeks tests and throughout the weekend as a whole. The Dutch star took eight position in the Supertec powered machine from Eddie Irvine. Indeed, with 2 minutes remaining, Verstappen and Irvine had the front row of the grid to themselves, indicating the fraught nature of the finals laps for all those involved. Happily for Johnny Herbert, there were no more mechanical dramas this afternoon and the former Silverstone winner was able to qualify the sister Jaguar comfortably.
Tenth place on the grid goes to Jacques Villeneuve's BAR Honda. Together with engineer Jock Clear, Villeneuve had secured pole position with five minutes remaining. However in this case, it was a case of too much too soon.
The British Grand Prix promises a lot. The treat of yet more rain, the battle between Barrichello and Heinz-Harald Frentzen into the first corner - Mika Hakkinen and Coulthard trying to get past, let alone Michael Schumacher playing the strategy game to win his fourth successive race. Perhaps most importantly... will Barrichello be going all out for the win? You bet he will.
