FIA Press Release
Weather conditions: Cool, windy and wet
JORDAN: TOP PLACES UNCHANGED
Heinz-Harald Frentzen stayed fastest on the strength of this morning's time in the Jordan Mugen Honda with Jarno Trulli remaining fifth fastest. "It was just a question of dodging all the puddles," said technical director Mike Gascoyne, "We could learn nothing worthwhile from the experience."
McLAREN: COULTHARD STOPS ON CIRCUIT
David Coulthard remained third fastest in his McLaren-Mercedes, but stopped out on the circuit at the start of the Hangar Straight with an apparent hydraulic problem. The session had to be red-flagged in order to retrieve the car during which the recovery vehicle got stuck in the mud and then had in turn to be rescued by a tractor. Hakkinen retained fourth place, like his team-mate concentrating on wet weather set-up.
BAR: JORDAN REMAINS SIXTH
Jacques Villeneuve's British American 01 remained sixth fastest despite a close shave coming onto the Hangar Straight when he found a marshal on the track going to the aid of David Coulthard's McLaren. Both his and Zonta's sister car had a gearbox change prior to the start of the second session following problems this morning.
FERRARI: NO CHANGES
Rubens Barrichello (7th) and Michael Schumacher (21st) understandably failed to improve their times during the afternoon session. Although there were no problems for either car, a team insider admitted that "the conditions were pretty useless."
BENETTON: INTERMEDIATE SET-UP
The Benetton Playlife drivers both worked on intermediate chassis set-ups during the afternoon, but neither improved their time from this morning. Giancarlo Fisichella survived a quick spin on his last lap.
BRIEFLY:
WILLIAMS: Jenson Button remained 11th despite a spin in his Williams-BMW. Commented technical director Patrick Head; "The weather ensured that this was not a conclusive session, but after last week's test here at Silverstone we have enough data available to deal with all conditions."
MINARDI: Marc Gene lost the first 20 minutes of the session while his Minardi's engine change was completed.
SAUBER: Pedro Diniz was complaining of too much standing water around the circuit, but was happy with his wet eather set-up while Mika Salo certainly did not have the right handling balance.
ARROWS: Pedro de La Rosa's problems with the Arrows A21 this morning were traced to hydraulic problems.
PROST: Nick Heidfeld was second fastest to Ralf Schumacher during the second part of the session when conditions were dry while Alesi spun off and stalled his Prost-Peugeot.
Report by Formula-1.co.uk
Not much to say about this second Friday practice session, given that it was virtually washed out thanks to continuous heavy rain.
The session was red-flagged after 30 minutes when David Coulthard's McLaren Mercedes broke down. The four-wheel drive towing the stricken McLaren got stuck in the mud. After this little mishap had been remedied, the cars once again too k the track.
In treacherous conditions, many drivers lost control of their cars, spinning into the gravel traps around the circuit. As a result of this, little will have been learned by the teams and drivers, except perhaps Silverstone in April wasn't the brightest idea that the FIA have ever conjured up...
