FIA Press Release
Weather conditions: sunny and warm
McLAREN: FIRST AND SECOND FASTEST
Mika Hakkinen (1m 27.418s) and David Coulthard (1m 27.475s) set first and second fastest times in their McLaren-Mercedes MP4/15s in this morning's warm-up, Mika running a couple of laps in the spare car just to check it out. "An uneventful and trouble-free session for both cars," commented Ron Dennis.
FERRARI: SCHUMACHER LEADS THE PURSUIT
Michael Schumacher set third fastest time (1m 27.60s) in the Ferrari F1-2000 and was generally pretty happy with the feel of the car. During pit stop practice he unfortunately ran into Ferrari mechanic Massimo Trebbi in the pit lane and knocked him over, fortunately without injury. Rubens Barrichello set fourth fastest time (1m 28.220s), admitting that he had improved his car's set-up since qualifying but that it was still not perfect.
JORDANS: FIFTH AND SIXTH
The Jordan Mugen-Hondas of Heinz-Harald Frentzen (1m 28.426s) and Jarno Trulli (1m 28.506s) wound up fifth and sixth fastest. "No real problems, just where we should be" said technical director Mike Gascoyne. "A very incident-free session. Sorry if that sounds rather boring."
BENETTON: FISICHELLA TAKES SEVENTH
Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton Playlife set seventh fastest time, the Italian driver happier with his set-up than he had been yesterday, but Alexander Wurz (21st) still complained of a serious rear-end imbalance.
MINARDI: GENE MAKES TOP TEN
Marc Gene managed eighth fastest time, but Gaston Mazzacane spun off and wound up slowest of all. "We are good on full tanks," said Giancarlo Minardi, "although we lack a qualifying specification engine."
JAGUAR: IRVINE FEELS UPBEAT
Eddie Irvine wound up ninth fastest in the Jaguar R1, feeling guardedly confident for his race prospects, while Johnny Herbert (20th) remains optimistic that his choice of the harder available tyre will be vindicated when it comes to the race.
Briefly
WILLIAMS: Jenson Button (11th) feels he is now getting to grips with the circuit but Ralf Schumacher (16th) was frustrated by excessive understeer which was worse than he had experienced all weekend.
PROST: Jean Alesi (10th) had a false alarm when an oil warning light flashed on his Prost-Peugeot's dashboard while Nick Heidfeld (12th) made aerodynamic changes and rectified a long brake pedal.
BAR: Jacques Villeneuve (13th) was suffering from back pains after qualifying and therefore allowed Ricardo Zonta (15th) to run in the spare BAR-Honda.
ARROWS: Pedro de la Rosa's Arrows A21 (18th) stopped on the circuit with hydraulic failure while Jos Verstappen (17th) complained that his car did not feel good over the high kerbs.
