FIA Press Release

Weather conditions: Cool and bright

McLAREN: HAKKINEN GOES FASTEST
Mika Hakkinen surged ahead of Michael Schumacher to set fastest time this morning (1m 24.973s) in his McLaren-Mercedes MP4/15 at the end of a closely contested session which saw his team-mate David Coulthard third fastest just 0.117sec behind.

"It was a pretty uneventful session with few incidents and both cars were pretty well balanced," said Ron Dennis.

FERRARI: SECOND AND SIXTH
Michael Schumacher set second fastest time in his Ferrari F1-2000 (1m 25.085s) and reported himself pleased with the handling balance, both he and team-mate Rubens Barrichello (6th/1m 26.357s) using the revised spec. qualifying engine which they will keep for this afternoon's session. Barrichello had a minor electrical problem and was still not happy with the set-up.

JORDAN: THE MOOD IS POSITIVE
The Jordan Mugen-Hondas of Jarno Trulli (1m 25.852s) and Heinz-Harald Frentzen (1m 26.097s) had no problems to speak of during this morning's session. "There was not much drama for either of them," said Race Director Trevor Foster. "We settled our tyre choice for this afternoon and worked on chassis set-up which on this circuit calls for a bit of a compromise."

JAGUAR: CLOSELY MATCHED
The Jaguar R1s of Eddie Irvine (9th.1m 26.566s) and Johnny Herbert (11th/1m26.729s) spent much of the session evaluating tyres and concentrating on making the car ride the high kerbs as well as possible. "The car is much better, but it needs to be better still," said Herbert.

SAUBER: SALO TAKES SEVENTH
Mika Salo wound up seventh in his Sauber-Petronas, he and team-mate Pedro Diniz (10th) experimenting with different downforce levels. The drivers were generally quite satisfied but still complained of a slight lack of traction.

BAR: VILLENEUVE HAS TWO SPINS
Jacques Villeneuve wound up tenth fastest on 1m 26.551s after two spins, the second of which left him stranded in a gravel trap just after he switched to new tyres. Ricardo Zonta wound up 20th after losing 15 minutes of the second part of the session while mechanics completed an engine change on his car.

BRIEFLY:
WILLIAMS: Ralf Schumacher (12th) had a brake problem which sent him skating across one of the gravel traps. "But the car's handling is pretty good, apart from a touch of understeer at the apex of the corners." Later in the session he had to switch off his engine after a malfunction of the throttle butterfly mechanicsm. Jenson Button (18th) finished the session in 18th place after losing much time early in the session with an hydraulic problem.
BENETTON: Giancarlo Fisichella (14th) lost time with hydraulic problems on his Benetton while Alexander Wurz complained of rear end instability.
MINARDI: Marc Gene (21st) crashed his Minardi at Piratella, losing a front wheel.
ARROWS: Jos Verstappen (15th) and Pedro de la Rosa (17th) concentrated on general set-up work.
PROST: The Prost-Peugeot team concentrated on trying different aerodynamic settings and a new specification V10 engine.
