McLAREN: 24th POLE FOR HAKKINEN
Mika Hakkinen took the 24th pole position of his career here at Imola this afternoon with a 1m 24.714s best, beating Michael Schumacher's Ferrari by 0.091sec. "The kerbs on this circuit are particularly difficult," he said. "You need to use them a lot, but if you are too greedy they can cause an accident. I was never fully comfortable with my car yesterday but we made some changes overnight and also a very good change during the qualifying session."
David Coulthard (1m 25.014s) set third fastest time. "I had the potential to be quicker, but ran wide out of the second Rivazza corner and lost time on the run down to the final chicane."
FERRARI: SCHUMACHER DISAPPOINTED
Michael Schumacher was disappointed to miss out on pole position, qualifying his Ferrari F1-2000 second on 1m 24.805s. "I was quite a bit faster on my third run but it all went wrong for me when I ran wide out of Rivazza," he said. "But at least we are on the front row."
Rubens Barrichello (4th/1m 25.242s) was not happy with the handling of his car. "It was not as good as yesterday," he said, "but I expect we will solve the problem tonight."
WILLIAMS: BEST OF THE REST
Ralf Schumacher's Williams-BMW FW22 wound up fifth fastest (1m 25.871s). "I was very happy with the car and I believe I could have picked up another 0.2sec," he said after stopping with an engine problem. Jenson Button (18th) admitted that he did not get the optimum out of his car. "I couldn't use the kerbs to best effect," he admitted.
JORDAN: SIXTH AND EIGHTH
The Jordan Mugen-Hondas of Heinz-Harald Frentzen (1m 25.892s) and Jarno Trulli (1m 26.002s) qualified sixth and eighth. "I was fighting for every thousandth of a second," said Frentzen. "We are good enough for the third row, which is what we expected." Trulli reported that his car was fine but he lost time on two runs with traffic and a yellow flag respectively.
JAGUAR: MIXED FORTUNES
Eddie Irvine was quite happy with his seventh fastest time (1m 25.929s) in the Jaguar R1, using the softer of the two tyre options, but Johnny Herbert (17th/1m 27.051s) simply could not make the harder tyre choice work to his advantage.
BRIEFLY
BAR: Jacques Villeneuve wound up ninth in his BAR-Honda, both he and team-mate Ricardo Zonta (14th) believing that the time they were paying the price for time lost earlier in the day.
SAUBER: Pedro Diniz was happy with his race set-up in tenth place.
BENETTON: Giancarlo Fisichella(19th) admitted he probably made the wrong tyre choice for his Benetton while team-mate Alexander Wurz (11th) was much happier with his car.
ARROWS: Pedro de la Rosa (13th) was happy with the balance of his Arrows A21.
MINARDI: Marc Gene spun off in his Minardi and had to take over Gaston Mazzacane's car as the third M02 had been damaged in this morning's accident.
PROST: Jean Alesi had gearchange problems in his Prost-Peugeot and Nick Heidfeld had to take over the spare AP03, set up for Alesi, after his own car would not start after a pit stop.
