FIA Press Release
WEATHER CONDITIONS: COOL AND BRIGHT (TRACK 14, AIR 9).
FERRARI: SCHUMACHER SETS EARLY PACE
Michael Schumacher's Ferrari F1-2000 set the early pace here at Imola with a fastest lap of 1m 27.270s this morning. The team was using a new spec rear wing for this race and will use a revised spec qualifying engine tomorrow afternoon. Michael was quite happy with the balance of his car but Rubens Barrichello (10th/1m 29.557s) was not to satisfied with his car set-up.
McLARENS SECOND AND FOURTH
The McLaren-Mercedes MP4/15s of David Coulthard (1m 24.478s) and Mika Hakkinen (1m 28.649s) set second and fourth fastest times, both drivers using just a single set of tyres on the drying track surface. Coulthard was happy with the balance of his car and Hakkinen might have been quicker had he not aborted his final run when he came up behind one of the Arrows just before the pits.
JAGUAR: MIXED FORTUNES
Eddie Irvine had a good run (1m 25.566s) to third fastest time in the Jaguar R1 but team-mate Johnny Herbert wound up a disappointed 19th (1m 30.986s) after yet another engine failure.
JORDAN MAKE STEADY START
The Jordan Mugen-Honda team had a steady start to practice with Heinz-Harald Frentzen fifth (1m 29.129s) and Jarno Trulli 16th (1m 29.984s). Neither car had any problem to report and both drivers used one set of tyres each.
WILLIAMS: RALF SCHUMACHER UPBEAT
Ralf Schumacher was upbeat and confident with the feel of his Williams-BMW FW22 (6th/1m 29.216s) despite slightly too much understeer. Jenson Button (7th/1m 30.727s) took things easily, reporting that the car was OK although he was surprised how bumpy the track seemed to be and how much use of the kerbs was required for a really quick lap.
BENETTON: FISICHELLA PLEASED
Giancarlo Fisichella was happy with seventh fastest time (1m 29.304s) concentrating on engine mapping and dialing our understeer. Alexander Wurz was 13th with no reported problems.
BRIEFLY
SAUBER: Pedro Diniz (8th) was well satisfied with his Sauber-Petronas, but Mika Salo (15th) complained of poor traction.
ARROWS: The Arrows A21s of Pedro de la Rosa(11th) and Jos Verstappen (12th) spent the morning on full tanks checking brakes and fuel consumption.
BAR: Ricardo Zonta did three runs with his BAR-Honda while Jacques Villeneuve (21st) had to have an engine and gearbox change between sessions.
PROST: Jean Alesi (14th) reported that his car felt as though it had "the best Peugeot engine I've ever tried" and was happy apart from a slight chassis balance problem. Nick Heidfeld had engine problems.
MINARDI: In the Minardi camp Gaston Mazzacane (20th) and Marc Gene (17th) were working on set-up.
