FIA Press Release
Warm-up, 09.30 to 10.00
Weather conditions: damp track, drying steadily
Fisichella fastest for Benetton
Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton-Playlife set fastest time in the warm-up on 1m 26.935s. "We didn't touch the set-up and apart from a small engine problem, the car was fine," he said. Alexander Wurz (7th/1m 28.317s) still complained that his car felt unstable.
McLarens second and sixth
David Coulthard (2nd/1m 27.305s) and Mika Hakkinen(6th/1m 28.297s) had uneventful warm-ups, both drivers trying their spare McLaren-Mercedes MP4/14s with different chassis set-ups for the wet and dry track conditions.
Frentzen's Jordan takes third
Heinz-Harald Frentzen's Jordan Mugen-Honda 199 set third fastest time on 1m 27.604s, the pole winner reporting that he felt quite happy with its feel both in wet and dry conditions. Damon Hill wound up 21st on 1m 30.626s after spinning off. "I'm worried that the cars on the extra soft tyres could be in trouble during the first few laps after the overnight rain has washed down the track," he said.
Ralf Schumacher fourth
Ralf Schumacher set fourth fastest time in the Williams FW21(1m 27.986s) and reported himself well pleased with the car. Alex Zanardi wound up 16th on 1m 29.425s running quite a lot of fuel and feeling optimistic. "The car felt OK and the lap times were coming down faster than in qualifying as the track dried out towards the end," he said.
Prosts fifth and ninth
The Prost-Peugeots of Olivier Panis (1m 28.168s) and Jarno Trulli (1m 28.640s) set fifth and ninth fastest times, both being amongst the quickest to switch to dry rubber during the course of the session. Both cars are racing with the Evo4 version of the Peugeot V10.
Irvine tenth for Ferrari
Joint World Championship leader Eddie Irvine's Ferrari F399 (1m 28.728s) wound up ninth, two places behind Mika Salo (1m 28.558s). "We had a mixed chassis set-up," said Irvine, "and the cars felt well balanced in the wet."
Briefly
Johnny Herbert (18th/1m 29.703s) tried his race car and the spare but still felt unhappy about their rear end stability. Rubens Barrichello (12th/1m 28.941s) improved his car's rear grip before the end of the session. Jacques Villeneuve (13th/1m 28.969s) suffered a left rear suspension breakage but successfully managed to get his BAR back to the pits, but team-mate Ricardo Zonta (15th/1m 29.376s) had a trouble-free run.
