FIA Press Release
Free practice, 9.00 to 11.00
Weather conditions: overcast and cool
Hakkinen fastest again
Mika Hakkinen's McLaren-Mercedes MP4/14 set fastest lap again during this morning's free practice session on 1m 18.945s, the World Champion still trying to work out an even better balance and also being briefly delayed by a momentary electronic gearchange glitch. David Coulthard damaged his nose wing with a trip over the chicane kerbing early in the session and later straight-lined the same section without damage on his way to fourth fastest time (1m 19.667s). "It's difficult to comment about the car set-up until we see how it is in qualifying," he said, "but my feeling is that it still needs a little more work."
Schumacher second despite spin
Ralf Schumacher was extremely happy with his Williams FW21 (2nd/1m 19.401s) despite a spin which he admitted was his own mistake, after which he stalled the engine. Alex Zanardi (9th/1m 20.109s) trying to dial out understeer and experimenting with a mix of used and new tyres.
Irvine's Ferrari takes third
Eddie Irvine's Ferrari F399 wound up third fastest (1m 19.66s. "Since the weather has got cooler, the track conditions have changed and we had to use a new set-up," he said. Mika Salo (14th/1m 20.385s) had to take a spare F399 after suffering hydraulic problems before the start of the session.
Barrichello fifth for Stewart
Rubens Barrichello (5th/1m 19.812s) continued trying to reduce understeer by fitting a new front wing while Johnny Herbert (16th/1m 20.410s) complained of rear end instability on his Stewart-Ford.
Problems for Jordan
Although Damon Hill was well satisfied with sixth fastest time on 1m 19.919s, he found the difference between new and used tyres proved to be marginal and feels he needs to make further improvements to the car set-up. Heinz-Harald Frentzen suffered a loss of pneumatic valve pressure after only 12 laps and a new Mugen-Honda V10 had to be installed during the course of the session. Once the replacement was in place, a problem with the oil tank delayed the completion of the car with the result that Frentzen could not complete another full flying lap before the chequered flag. His best was a 17th fastest 1m 20.643s.
Briefly
Jacques Villeneuve (7th/1m 19.979s) was happy with the feel of his BAR but Ricard Zonta (19th/1m 21.224s) was badly lacking speed. Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton (8th/1m 20.012s) survived a straight-on moment and the Italian reported that the car "did not feel too bad" on new tyres."
