FIA Press Release
Free practice, 13.00 to 14.00
Weather conditions: sunny and breezy
Hakkinen keeps ahead for McLaren
Mika Hakkinen improved his fastest time to 1m 20.758s while David Coulthard ended up sixth (1m 21.461s), both drivers staying on one set of tyres throughout the session. Neither had any major problem but Coulthard straightlined the chicane on one occasion. "It was an uneventful session which inevitably saw the pace of our cars drop as they ran further and further on their single sets of tyres," said Ron Dennis.
Ferraris second and fourth
Mika Salo (1m 20.920s) and Eddie Irvine (1m 21.338s) were second and fourth fastest. Salo was particularly satisfied, commenting; "I finished my planned programme, did a lot of work and tried the two types of tyre." Irvine damaged his suspension and a bargeboard when he ran over debris from the nose section dropped by Pedro Diniz's Sauber early in the session. "We are closer to the McLarens than we have been in some places," he said.
Panis uses qualifying set-up
Olivier Panis (1m 21.134s) wound up third fastest after using a qualifying set-up after initial gearbox problems were rectified on his Prost-Peugeot. Jarno Trulli (9th/1m 21.750s) reported that his car felt improved but he still had some braking problems.
Mixed fortunes at Williams
Ralf Schumacher (5th/1m 21.385s) was happy with the handling of his Williams FW21 but team-mate Alex Zanardi(16th/1m 22.321s) was struggling for set-up and had more understeer than he would have liked.
Barrichello seventh for Stewart
Rubens Barrichello's Stewart-Ford wound up seventh on 1m 21.505s. "I can't understand why the car is behaving so strangely over the kerbs when it was so good at Monza," he said. Johnny Herbert (13th/1m 21.982s) damaged his front wing and said he needed to make his car "more supple."
Briefly
Giancarlo Fisichella (8th/1m 21.636s) reported he still had a touch too much understeer on his Benetton-Playlife and also ran a second set of tyres. Alexander Wurz (17th/1m22.427s) suffered electronic sensor problems and complained that his car was also difficult to drive. Jacques Villeneuve (10th/1m 21.850s) was well satisfied with his British American 01 after a productive test at Magny-Cours, but team-mate Ricardo Zonta (21st/1m 23.604s) was struggling. Pedro Diniz's Sauber-Petronas (18th/1m 22.462s) shed its nose section which it then ran over, scattering debris all over the start/finish straight. The session was red flagged to a halt for six minutes while the wreckage was cleared up.
