FIA Press Release
Warm-up, 09.30 to 10.00
Weather conditions: overcast and warm
McLarens stay ahead
Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard had trouble-free warm-ups in their McLaren-Mercedes, Mika briefly trying a couple of laps in the spare MP4/14 which he used yesterday to qualify on pole position. "I spent my session trying to clean up my side of the starting grid," said Coulthard.
Villeneuve a satisfied third
Jacques Villeneuve found the cooler conditions benefitted the balance of his British American 01 and set third fastest time as a result. Unfortunately Ricardo Zonta (20th) had an engine problem and it is now being considered whether a fresh engine should be installed in his race chassis or he should race the spare car.
Saubers fourth and fifth
The Sauber-Petronas team of Pedro Diniz and Jean Alesi set fourth and fifth fastest times this morning. Diniz reported his car was much better as usual with a heavy fuel load, while Alesi was just disappointed that "we messed up yesterday's qualifying" with the wrong set-up.
Hill sixth for Jordan
Damon Hill set sixth fastest ime in the Jordan Mugen-Honda. "We only made minor changes to the car overnight but it is much better today," he said. Heinz-Harald Frentzen (13th) admitted he was finding it difficult to adapt the set-up for the cooler conditions.
Irvine's Ferrari seventh
Eddie Irvine wound up seventh fastest, starting in the spare Ferrari F399, switching to his race car which then had an electronic problem, and back to the spare. Mika Salo was still taking things steadily and not pressing too hard, setting 15th fastest time.
Stewart-Ford drivers upbeat
Johnny Herbert and Rubens Barrichello were eighth and tenth fastest in their Stewart SF3s, both equipped with fresh series 3 versions of the Ford CR-1 engine for the race. Barrichello was struggling for mechanical grip and tried the spare car after an off-track moment into the gravel.
Briefly
Both Benetton-Playlife drivers reported that their cars were going better, Alexander Wurz (9th) and Giancarlo Fisichella (12th) both running heavy fuel loads. Fisichella later stopped on the circuit with a broken driveshaft. The Prost-Peugeot drivers found their balance improving with fuel aboard, but the cars feel heavy to drive. Jarno Trulli (11th) reported that his car felt a little too nervous in fast corners. Both Williams drivers ran on heavy fuel loads.
